I got lots of stuff to do tonight. Thursday for me is the “must get to the outline” stage of my message prep every week. I usually work till midnight-ish trying to land that plane. However, that would usually not stop me from finding a time to watch a “critical” sporting event on the television. I’m pretty sure I peaked out of my office a few times in 08 during “The Tournament” a.k.a. March Madness (college basketball – please genuflect as you say, “The Tournament”). I might have put off parsing a Greek verb or two during the NBA finals.
But tonight, I may not watch the contrived, absurd “National Championship Game” for college football. And it’s not as some of you would believe because, I’ve had enough football or I don’t like college football. I do. I like it with a fox, in a box, on a train, in the rain.
But we already HAVE a national championship team, the undefeated Utah Utes.
Do I think they are the best team in the country. No. I think USC is. But that’s not the question. They have met the criteria that we have always used to determine a national champion in college football. They went undefeated, beat good teams, handily won their bowl game against a team that was ranked number one more weeks of the season than anyone else.
So I may not watch…
Rick Reilly has a great piece on this on ESPN’s web site. Click here.
Here’s to the winner of this non-bowl (it doesn’t even have a name) chanting after the game, “WE’RE PROBABLY NUMBER 2!”
And “GET ‘EM” to the state AG of Utah!
