Welcoming New Staff

John Sorrell

Generation Ministries Pastor

John and family just moved from Singapore, where he was the youth pastor at the International Baptist Church for the last five years. People from over 50 countries worshiped together each weekend in a bunch of different languages. Before that, John was the youth pastor at Capital Community Church in Beijing, China, for nine years. John was born and raised in Ohio (Go Bengals!) and has a youth ministry degree from Cedarville University.  He has a Masters of Divinity from Bethel Seminary and is two years into a Ph.D.

John and Katie met in seminary when he was living in Beijing and she was living in Des Moines. They dated over Skype for eight months (before FaceTime was invented) and then got married (kids, don’t try this at home). Before John and Katie met, Katie attended Journey for seven years right when Ed and Linda moved here in 2000. Katie is a dietitian and stays home with their girls. John and Katie have two little princesses, Elsa who’s 6 (and named before the movie came out) and Clara who’s 4. Both girls are excited about having a car and a yard to play in.

God has been leading John to a new role for a while. He has a passion for spiritual formation and building disciple-making communities. After 17 years experience in youth ministry, he is excited to apply his experience overseas to our generations team. Katie and John love the Journey DNA and are excited and honored to join the Journey team.

Morgan Mitchell

High School Director

My Name is Morgan Mitchell and I come from Rochester, NY. I was born and raised in the church and have found my calling to teach people what it means to look, live, and love like Jesus. I graduated with a degree in Business Management but during my college career, God made it very clear to me that he has called me to Pastor

After being on staff in many contexts at The Fathers House Church in Rochester, I served in roles within their youth ministry, both middle school and high school, and led their Children’s Ministry for a season. Within my time there I learned leadership development, how to teach and preach with a strong biblical perspective, and what it means to bring excellence in all that I do.

After much prayer and wise counsel I felt a call to move across the country to join the staff at Journey to lead the high school ministry. After asking God if there was an assignment there for me and meeting the tremendous leadership and community in San Diego, I made the leap.

In college, I started a Spoken Word Ministry where I used poetry creatively to minister to thousands of people. In my free time, I like fitness, drinking coffee, Prayer, and laughing. I am both white and black, so that leads to an interesting combo. I am currently in Seminary working on my Masters of Divinity. In the end, I want to be living proof of a loving God to a watching world.
