On February 25, 1993 in a storefront in Rancho San Diego, a small group of people met for the first time. This group would go on to become Journey Community Church.
After two years in Grenada, serving and caring for the people there, and eight years as part of the pastoral team at Horizon Christian Fellowship, Mike Burns and his wife Laurie felt God whispering that they were to start a church in East San Diego County. It was a risky move, one that Mike and Laurie sensed God kept pushing them toward. So, in an act of faith, they held that first small group meeting.
A little more than a month after the first small group gathering, the church launched on April 11, 1993—Easter Sunday. 350 people showed up for that first service, held in the parking lot of the storefront in Ranch San Diego.
From the beginning, Journey strived to be a “come-as-you-are” kind of place. With that set forth, people from all walks of life and backgrounds started to find a spot within the church.
Eventually, Journey outgrew the facility in Rancho San Diego, and after meeting at Monte Vista High School, finally settled in La Mesa. At its current location, Journey kept growing, now averaging a weekend attendance of 2,500 people in a diverse community.
